Art Gallery
One of the biggest and most attractive contemporary art galleries in the region, this fine exhibition space was provided as part of the £5 million redevelopment of the whole museum complex in 1989.
With 360 square metres of floor space, a flexible lockwall hanging system and the capability to meet the most demanding of environmental and security requirements, the gallery is able to present large-scale touring and self-produced exhibitions of the highest quality.
Since opening, the gallery has established itself as one of the best spaces of its kind in the region and its strategic importance is recognised by all the major funding agencies. The gallery’s programme is central within an increasingly vigorous visual arts sector in Carlisle, including the University of Cumbria, studio groups and artist-run gallery spaces and initiatives across the city.
We feel a particular commitment to local communities - not only to present work which will appeal to a broad spectrum of taste and expectation, but also to serve local audiences well by encouraging an appreciation and awareness of a great variety of material which fully reflects the quality and diversity of contemporary visual arts practice, nationally and internationally.
By 'visual arts' we mean a comprehensive range of work in many different media - painting, sculpture/installation, film and photography, the applied arts, live art, and art which uses a variety of electronic media to exploit and embrace the potential of new technology.
