Bronze Age Metalwork

The museum contains a representative sample of Bronze Age metalwork from the county. The largest part of the collection consists of axe heads. These range from flat axes to socketed ones. Some of the early flat axes are decorated and are similar to examples from Ireland.

Metalworking is represented by a Late Bronze Age mould for casting spearheads. This rare survival comes from Croglin and is largely complete.
 
There are also two pieces of Bronze Age gold jewellery. The first is the terminal of a lunula, or crescent shaped necklace, which has decoration that is similar to that seen on Beaker pottery. The second object is later in date and is a bar of gold decorated with a ‘basketwork’ pattern.
