By long-standing right, the end of August is still declared annually as ‘Carlisle Great Fair’ a week long street market with entertainment thrown in. Historical pageants were held at Bitts Park in 1928, 1951 and 1977.
The first pageant of 1928 was the largest and most spectacular event. The event lasted from 6th to 11th August and was attended by Lord Lonsdale, Theodore Carr, and HRH Princess Mary. Thousands of Carlisle citizens acted out the famous historical events of the city’s past and dressed in costume. Grown men and women dressed in costumes of the past. Mary Queen of Scots appeared on horseback, Bonnie Prince Charlie stormed the city and Kinmont Willie escaped again!
