Print of Cricket Match at Edenside by Sam Bough

This colourful oil painting by Sam Bough, around 1844, shows a cricket match played on a blustery day by the River Eden. The main body of spectators are gathered on the far side of the pitch to the right of the scene and a small group stand in the foreground. Beyond the River Eden, which crosses the centre of the composition, rises the city of Carlisle. Beyond the city walls Carlisle Castle is visible to the left.
