Carlisle 'Old' Coat of Arms
A clay reproduction by artist Wyn Abbot, of the 'old' Carlisle Coat of Arms, (which was used in combination with the 'new' Coat of Arms until the 1920s) which was used in the Middle Ages and is thought to have been based upon the family arms of a sheriff of Carlisle during the early years of the city's history.
The red roses were symbols of the Virgin Mary who was patron saint of the priory of Carlisle.
