Fine Art Print of Madeleine by Arthur Hughes
This sensitive work by the ‘last great Pre-Raphaelite painter’ Arthur Hughes depicts Madeleine in a half-length oil study. It is a reproduction on premium silk 240gsm paper from a high resolution digital image taken from the original work held within the fine art collection at Tullie House. This wonderful piece of dramatic art is available for you to own for £19.95 (excluding postage) exclusively from Tullie House Museum’s shop.
The young woman faces right, her hair caught loosely back and her gaze cast downwards at a string of beads which she lifts from a small casket held in her left hand. She wears a gown with wide slashed sleeves and cotton chemise gathered at the throat. The work was originally painted 1862 as a study for the female figure in A Music Party completed in 1864, and reworked in around 1865 into the work that we see today. Hughes model for this work was his wife Tryphena, a frequent sitter for the Pre-Raphaelite as a romantic Medieval heroine.
