In a flowing composition of 1875, The Death of Lady Macbeth depicts Act V, Scene I, of Macbeth by Shakespeare, where in a room in Dunsinane Castle Lady Macbeth in the centre sits upon the throne, her hair loose and flowing. Beside her sits a sleeping attendant holding a feather fan loosely in her hand. A physician cools Lady Macbeth's brow with a cloth dampened from a bowl held by another female attendant. To left of composition a choirboy holding an incense burner stands beside a friar, kneeling at prayer. To the right an old woman stoops beside Lady Macbeth's throne, leaning towards her. Detailed working and literary subjects are typical of Pre-Raphaelites’ and Rossetti’s work.
