Print of Carlisle Market Place in front of the Old Town Hall by Herbert Lees
This oil painting by Herbert Lees shows a crowded Carlisle Market Place in front of the Old Town Hall in the 1870s. The Greenmarket is filled covered stalls, vendors and their customers, adding colour and life to what is shown to be a dull day, to the left the clock tower of the town hall is just visible. Lees was known in Carlisle at this time as headmaster of the city's art school, and despite having connections with the Royal Academy Schools he remained in Carlisle for the rest of his life.
