London, England CALMG : 1949.125.29 oil painting

Madeleine 1862-65 by Arthur Hughes.

A half-length study of a young woman facing right, her hair caught loosely back and her gaze cast downwards at a string of beads which she lifts from a small casket held in her left hand. She wears a gown with wide slashed sleeves and cotton chemise gathered at the throat.

The work was originally conceived as a study for the female figure in A Music Party,1864 and originally painted in 1862 and reworked into the finished painting we see here in around 1865; the preliminary sketch for the finished work is also in the collection.
