Strawberry Thief printed cotton 1917-1940, original design by William Morris 1883.
A full width sample of a William Morris block-printed textile. The repeating design features two pairs of thrushes in shades of blue and brown and pink and yellow standing amongst ripe strawberries. The floral background features roses, tulips and oak leaves in shades of green, blue and pink on a deep blue ground. A Morris and Company paper label is attached to the lower left corner.
This sample was printed between 1917 and 1940 by Morris' own printers in Merton Abbey. These textiles also have a strong local connection, with the Morris designs later being printed at Cummersdale in Carlisle.
