The Wildflower Grasslands of Cumbria
Dates
24th April 2010 - 9th July 2010Location : Tullie House Special Exhibitions Gallery
Meadows full of brightly-coloured wildflowers and butterflies were once a familiar sight in Cumbria. Today these glorious displays are few and far between. But Cumbria still has a variety of spectacular wildflower grasslands from coastal dune and marsh, to upland hay meadow.
This collaborative exhibition with Cumbria Wildlife Trust celebrates the delights of the county’s flower-rich grasslands, looking at the beauty of the flowers and the different places in which they grow, as well as the folklore surrounding them. It also explores some of the insects and birds that depend on them. The display also looks at projects led by Cumbria Wildlife Trust to enhance and recreate new wildflower meadows in Cumbria. In some places wildflowers are colonising new ground on old industrial sites – flower power indeed!
Formed in 1962, Cumbria Wildlife Trust is the only voluntary organisation devoted solely to the conservation of the wildlife and wild places of Cumbria. The Trust stands up for wildlife, creates wildlife havens, and seeks to raise environmental awareness.
