Fine and Decorative Art

The art collection includes fine and decorative art dating from 1564 to the present day. It includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, furniture and musical instruments. It represents art created by the people of northern Cumbria in particular and also from Britain and further afield.

Natural Sciences

The Natural Science collection represents the incredible biodiversity of Cumbria. It includes geology, which spans more than 5 millions years of history,  a large collection of vertebrates and invertebrates, and a herbarium that represents the vast range of plants that are found in the county.

Human History

The Human History collection represents the people who have lived in this region over thousands of years. It includes objects left by Cumbria's earliest humans, more than 10,000 years ago, the key Roman settlement of Lugavallium and the west end of Hadrian's Wall, Viking incursions, the lawless Reivers and Carlisle's growth as a modern city.
