Eco-Craft Family Drop-ins 

1 - 4pm

This summer to tie in with our exciting exhibition, Once Upon A Planet, we've designed a summer full of family activity that celebrates nature as well as being as sustainable as possible. Crafts will be made from reused and recycled materials to limit our impact on the environment.

All of the activity listed here is funded by Hope Streets and the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is part of a bigger project to create more space for young people's creativity and expression.

UN-LOCK Activism Art workshop with artist and activist - Katie Lock

Activism Patches

10.30am - 12pm, Saturday 2 July in the Tullie Community Room FREE drop-in workshops for young people 12-25yrs

Wear your passion on your sleeve by creating bold and punchy activism patches through simple creative stenciling techniques and interesting symbology.

World Youth Skills Day - Creative workshop demos

10am - 3pm, Friday 15 July in the Tullie Community Room - FREE

1-hour sessions at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

This summer, our creative workshops are being led by young and emerging artists who have ALL the skills we need to inspire and motivate young creatives looking for things to do in the holidays.

We're inviting you to help them test out ideas, see what works and while you're here find out more about what's coming up this summer at Tullie.

Sustainable Carlisle Conversation Café

12 - 1.30pm, Saturday 16 July inside the Once Upon A Planet exhibition

Sustainable Carlisle have a Conversation Café that happens once a month at a local food and drink establishment, but this Summer some of them are happening at Tullie. It's an informal gathering of people who want to talk about developing a Cooperative Community.

No need to book for the conversation café, there will be a meeting point in the Tullie gardens. All ages welcome and we'd love to see you there.

The Carlisle Unity Festival is also taking place at Tullie on this date so look out on social media for more info.

SoundGardening workshop

1pm and 2.30pm, Tuesday 26 July in the Tullie Secret Garden - FREE

Have you ever really listened to nature? This workshop led by multi-talented artist CJ is designed for exploring and listening closely to nature. Record found sounds and create an ambient soundscape in this 1-hour workshop.

Another Way Film Festival

Chasing Coral + double feature student film + Q&A

A epic adventure to capture our changing oceans

Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world.

Creative Planet workshop

Contemporary craft with artist Megan Bowyer

1 - 4pm, Friday 29 July in the Tullie Community room, FREE drop-in

Megan Bowyer is an artist currently based in Paris France.

She can usually be found under a pile of sticks, rummaging through the leaves, or watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. She has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, is studying for an MA in Drawing, and specialises in graphite drawings of objects and plants that mean a lot to different people.

Creative Planet workshop

Pen and watercolour animal illustrations with artist Ayeisha Muir

1 - 4pm, Wednesday 3 August in the Tullie Community room, FREE drop-in

Join artist Ayeisha and create some animalistic artwork with personality!

If you like drawing, this one is for you. You can take inspiration from the Tullie natural science collections or create your own mythical creature.

Protest Placards

Art is an energy! Create a protest placard to take to your next demonstration or to place in your window. Come and put your creative energy to good use and also learn some sign language as you make.

A Plastic Ocean is an award-winning feature length documentary brought to you by a group of dedicated scientists, film-makers, social entrepreneurs, scholars, environmentalists and journalists, that explores the fragile state of our oceans and uncovers alarming truths about the consequences of our disposable lifestyle.

D.I.Y Zines

10.30am - 12pm, Saturday 3 September in the Tullie Community Room FREE drop-in workshops for young people 12-25yrs

Zines are brilliant ways to communicate, celebrate and shout about what you are passionate about. In this workshop you will be able to chop, doodle, collage in the classic lo-fi way. Leave a copy at Tullie to share your ideas and take one home.

Back to the future! The historical years of no waste

Friday 9 September – evening event

A deep delve into the Tullie House costume collection to celebrate our planet's natural resources, food, nature and life.

Full of amazing guest contributors and supported by Tullie's amazing curators.

Once Upon A Planet Launch Day

All activities will happen in the Tullie House Community room, the Once Upon A Planet exhibition, Film theatre and Tullie gardens (12-4pm)

Come to Tullie and celebrate our new exhibition all about Cumbria's nature and the climate emergency!

This event will be a packed afternoon of activities for young people and families.

You can expect Zine-making – SoundGardening workshops - Short films – A Bug hunt - Spray paint signs - Slow Art - Face & body paint – Eco-crafts – Museum gallery trails and more treats.

All activities are designed for you to drop in throughout the afternoon, but if you want to secure a place on the SoundGardening workshop or see the film, see information below on how to book/screening times. Activities taking place inside the museum require general admission/an annual ticket - kids and young people under 18 get theirs free. You can get your admission in advance here or get it on the day at reception.

Wildlife Media & Art Student Films

(screening at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm)

In the film theatre in Old Tullie House - just turn up!

To mark our launch of the Another Way film programme, we'll be showing some short films to spark conversations about our connections with nature, sustainability and human impact. Come and see some locally produced film, and if you're a filmmaker - chat to us about how we could share your work this summer.

Another Way was founded by 16-year-old Amy Bray in 2019, stemming from her passion for our beautiful planet and especially the oceans she loves so devotedly. Amy's aim is to give people faith that voicing their opinions will make a difference. 

Zine Making workshop in the Once Upon A Planet Exhibition

Join artist Katie Lock in the exhibition and create a D.I.Y Zine! (Drop-in activity, all you need is admission)

Face & Body paint

Not just for kids! Come and get colourful and express your love for our marvelous planet!

Spray Painted graphic art with Dr Hessian Sachs

If you live in Carlisle, you've probably passed some awesome artwork by Dr Hessian Sachs.

He'll be in the garden to help you make some spray-painted artwork to leave behind in our garden gallery or take away. Drop by any time, no admission required. 

Eco-Crafts

We’ll be making natural wildflower seed bombs and rainbow party streamers.

Minibeast Hunt

How many minibeasts live in our garden? Join the hunt around the Tullie House Garden and see what exciting creatures have made their home here.

Nature Gallery Trail

We need your help! We need your help to find some of the animals that have escaped from the exhibition and are now lost around the museum. Pick up a trail at reception and see how many you can spot!
