Tullie House welcomes visits from pupils of all ages and stages to our award-winning galleries. General visits by school groups are currently free of charge. See below for more information about each of our galleries and the resources we currently offer.
Roman Frontier Gallery
This award-winning gallery was opened in June 2011, and compares life on the frontier 2000 years ago with life on frontiers today. The gallery is full of specially designed interactives to entertain, inform and inspire, including our popular ‘Roman Passport’ computer game.
Our Border Galleries tell the history of Carlisle from prehistory up to the present day, including a special area dedicated to the history of the notorious Border Reivers. There are activities throughout the galleries, including an area where pupils can make giant rubbings of Celtic crosses, try out Roman weaponry on top of a giant model of Hadrian’s Wall, have a go at sitting in a set of replica Medieval stocks and visit our Wildlife Dome. Throughout the gallery there are areas where students can try on costume and handle replica objects. Look out for our ‘Collections Conversations’ which are run at selected times of the day - students can handle real objects and discuss their significance with trained Museum Assistants.
Old Tullie House
Step into Tullie House as it was two hundred years ago. This beautiful building is full of original Jacobean features and currently displays works from our extensive Fine Art collection, including pieces by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
We also have two temporary exhibition spaces, please check the website for more information about upcoming exhibitions.
Experience the unique atmosphere of Carlisle's oldest city centre building owned by the city of Carlisle since the 1400s.
Visits by prior arrangement only (subject to staffing charge).
